Infrastructure and Equipment
Research Units
The Department has the necessary infrastructures and equipment for supporting cutting-edge research requirements in Biochemistry and Biotechnology. These equipment has been acquired through funding from Regional and National funding as well as via numerous national and European research grants attracted by the staff of the Department. The following research units function in the DBB:

Basic Instrumentation
The Department is equipped with all the basic infrastructures and equipment required for performing research and accomplishing its research goals. These equipment includes centrifuges, refrigerated and not, spectrophotometers (UV-VIS), analytical balances, a device for liquid sterilization, a washing machine, several hoods, fridges (+4°C), freezers (-20°C) and ultra-freezers (-80°C), water purification systems, nucleic acids and protein electrophoresis systems, incubators (cooling and not) and vertical laminar flow cabinets of class I and II biosafety.
Biochemistry & Proteomics
Automated protein purification system, analytical ultracentrifuge, luminometer, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis system, gel imaging systems, multimode plate readers (e.g. plate readers with absorbance UV/VIS spectrum, luminesence and fluorescence.
Biotechnology & Synthetic Biology
Plant growth chamber, high perfomance liquid chromatography systems with diode array or UV-VIS detectors, PCR and real-time PCR thermal cyclers, UV-visible spectrophotometers.
Genomics & Transcriptomics
Gene expression microarrays, PCR and real-time PCR thermal cyclers, automatic robotic liquid handler attached with laminar flob cabinet hybridization oven, gel imaging systems.
Organic Synthesis
High pressure liquid chromatography, chromatography columns, mass spectrometry.
Cellular & Developmental Biology
Plant growth chamber, fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS), fluorescent and reverse phase inverted microscopes, tissue homogenizers, automated microtome for large samples, stereoscope, automated cell counter.
Microbiology
Microbiological incubators, microbiological safety cabinets, PCR thermal cyclers, inverted microscope, vertical laminar airflow cabinets of class I and II biosafety, vacuum rotary evaporator system, solid phase extraction vacuum system with drying attachment.
