Biostatistics

Theory: 3 hours/week | ECTS Units: 6

Content – Aim of the course

The aim of this course is to teach the basic concepts and methods of statistics and their application in the clinical laboratory (quality control, determination of reference intervals, clinical decision limits). During exercises MS-Excel is used to solve problems.

Analytical Description of the Course

  • Clinic decision limits, sensitivity and precision in diagnostical tests, likelihood ratio, ROC curves, ratio and rate
  • Population distributions, samples, frequency distributions, descriptive statistics, histograms, pies, numerical statistics, mean mode, median, variation, range, percentiles, variance, standard deviation, coefficient of variation.
  • Estimation, point estimates, confidence intervals for the mean (large and small samples), confidence intervals for the variation (large and small samples), confidence intervals for the difference between two means (paired – unpaired), and confidence intervals for the ratio of the variances of two normal distributed populations.
  • Hypothesis testing, statistical significance, null hypothesis – alternative hypothesis, error of the first (α) and second kind (β), test for the mean (large and small samples), test for the difference between two means (large and small samples), paired significance testing, significance testing for the variation, comparing the variances of two populations.
  • Analysis of variance (anova).
  • Non-parametric tests, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Mann-Whithey test, Kruskal-Wallis test.
  • Qualitative variables, nominal – ordinal, comparison of a sample ratio with a given one, paired and unpaired comparison of the ratios between two samples, chi-square analysis (χ2).
  • Simple linear regression – correlation, the method of least squares, standard error of estimation, standard error for the “b” and “a”, correlation coefficient, confidence interval, prediction interval, test of independence, test of non-correlation
  • Survival Analysis, Relative researches, Data examples, Kaplan Meier
  • Statistical software package “SPSS”.

Assessment

The final grades are determined mainly by the results in the final examination and partially by the weekly assignments.
