Professional Rights
The graduates of the Department have established professional rights which have been defined by Presidential Decrees (Government Gazette A, no. 130/5 August 2009). Specifically:
They have the right:
- To teach in public and private educational institutions of all levels. Since 2017, the graduates have joined the branch of teaching staff of the secondary education of UE4 (ΠΕ 4 in greek), specialty Biologists (code 04), and are able to teach the courses of this relevant field.
- To conduct basic and applied research in the field of life sciences, in public or private sectors in Greece and abroad.
- To work as laboratory staff or to provide services (with any employment relationship) in public health services and in other state services (hospitals, prefectures, Hellenic Food Authority, General Chemical State Laboratory of Greece, and other organizations).
- To run private diagnostic laboratories and biochemistry or biotechnology companies
- To participate in the examination and analysis of samples in analytical microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and genetics laboratories.
- To carry out biochemical and biotechnological control of environmental parameters as well as studies and laboratory analyses of biotic and abiotic ecosystem factors.
- To participate in environmental protection, management, and restoration studies.
- To select, design and control the application of biotechnological methods and genetic engineering methods in industrial products.
- To engage in scientific research, consulting, and application of techniques in the field of bioinformatics.
They have the right to individually sign or co-sign:
- Results of laboratory analyses of biological and genetic material.
- Results of blood and stem cell banks that certify the safety of blood and its components, as well as the quality of stem cells that are intended for medical, pharmaceutical, or industrial use.
- Studies and certificates on the safety of health products made from tissues of animal, plant, and bacterial origin.
- Results of biological sampling during the import and export of products.
- Certificates of application of the principles of good laboratory practice in the control of chemicals.
- Certificates of quality and safety for human and public health of genetically modified organisms and new products.
- Environmental impact studies due to industrial and business activities.
- Studies and certificates of quality control and environmental safety.
- Expertise intended for administrative or judicial use, with the object of crossbreeding genetic data and processing of the relevant genetic material.
- Proposals submitted to the European Commission or to public organizations regarding subsidized research and technological development programs, which fall within the wider field of life sciences.
They have the right to apply for the acquisition of the title of specialty of Laboratory Genetics without additional examinations, if they satisfy specific criteria which are defined in the Government Gazette (Government Gazette 2661 / 1.7.2019).
