Women in Science – Event dedicated to women scientists
An event dedicated to women scientists was held with great success on Thursday 27th of March 2025 at 6 pm at the Institut Français, in Larisa.
The Department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology, DBB, honored the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science by hosting an event open to the public. Among the guests were women scientists at different stages of their careers. The facilitator was Professor K. Moutou, Deputy Head of the Department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology. In a packed with people hall, G. Karystianou, the President of Larisa City Council, opened the event. The invited speakers were, in alphabetical order:
- Anastasia Kantsadi, the youngest Assistant Professor at DBB
- Maria Kolovou, PhD student in the Department of Environment Science of the University of Thessaly and mother
- Elena Dadami, a Researcher who after a career in scientific research decided to become a secondary school teacher
- Kalliope Papadopoulou, Professor at the DBB and Head of the Plant & Environmental Biotechnology Laboratory
- Stamatia Papoutsopoulou, Assistant Professor at DBB
- Zoi Skaperda, Scientific Analyst Director in the University of Thessaly spin-off company, FoodOxys PC, as well as in the spin-out Olea Fortius PC
- Rodopi Stamatiou, Researcher and Mentor at Greek Women in STEM in Greece
- Suzanna Topalidou, Final year undergraduate student at DBB who wants to follow a scientific career
- Alexia Chatziparasidou, Consultant Clinical Embryologist, founding member and director of the model-assisted reproduction unit of EMBRYOLAB and Embryolab Academy
- Angelika Chroni, Research Director at NCSR Demokritos, Institute of Biosciences and Applications, awarded with the International Award L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science
Our guests shared and discussed their experiences in their scientific careers, the cultural and social stereotypes, and the obstacles women scientists face at work and at home. Moreover, several ideas were suggested as to what needs to be done to change towards a better future. The audience had the opportunity to participate and express their opinion in an online poll.
