Every citizen can be a scientist!

Apr 08th-10th, 2025

The action includes a lecture by the instructor of the GLOBE program, Mr. Thanasis Theodorakopoulos (https://www.globe.gov/web/tinycore.lab) on Wednesday 9/4/2025 at 13:30 Tuesday 08-Apr-2025 at 12:00, at the Hippocrates Auditorium at the Medical School of the University of Thessaly and training in the field (Church of Agios Ioannis, Olympus, Litochoro) on the morning of Thursday 10/4/2025.

The action is open to the academic community and the general public.

The lecture includes the following sections:

  • The movement of Makerspaces/Hacklabs in Europe: Hacklabs are physical spaces that allow users to create, experiment with, and share open-source technologies. These spaces promote education and skill development by encouraging free access to knowledge and social solidarity.
  • Open/Free Software: Open and Free Code enhance innovation through transparency and collaboration, allowing users and developers to participate in their development and adapt them to their needs. This philosophy offers free access to resources while promoting sustainability within the global tech community.
  • Citizen Science [Introduction to the GLOBE Program]: Citizen Science encourages active participation from citizens in scientific research, providing tools and educational programs for data collection. Participants contribute to understanding environmental phenomena while simultaneously developing their knowledge of science and technology.
  • Field research and data collection on mountain areas and alpine environment- Equipment/Clothing/Environmental conditions: Research in alpine ecosystems provides valuable information on climate change and its impacts. Data collection in mountainous environments requires specialized equipment and appropriate clothing to cope with challenging and extreme environmental conditions.

The students interested in participating in the field training, can use the bus of the University of Thessaly, which has 30 seats. Thus, they must submit their request by 31-03-2024 through the link https://forms.gle/CSz6qnzcmDAdaqCE6.
